You may have heard about changes to electricity pricing

In NSW, SA, parts of QLD and VIC new regulations apply from 1 July 2019. In these states, all energy retailers will advertise discounts for households against the same base prices.

Electricity regulations for NSW, QLD, SA and VIC households

New government regulation has been introduced as of 1 July 2019.

In NSW, SA and QLD this is known as the Default Market Offer (DMO). In Victoria, it’s the Victorian Default Offer (VDO).

We – and all retailers – will now advertise and offer discounts that refer to the DMO or VDO, which will help make comparing easier. Some exceptions apply, including for solar customers.

Automatic price reductions for some Standing rate customers

For Standing rate customers on flat rate or controlled load tariffs, the new regulated pricing may be automatically applied from 1 July 2019. This will likely mean reduced electricity bills from this point. You'll be notified of any price changes.

Changes to discounts

  • In NSW, parts of QLD and SA, all plans must show you an estimated yearly bill amount. This estimate is calculated for an average-usage customer in your area
  • In Victoria, all plans must show you an annual yearly saving against the VDO, either as a dollar amount or a discount. This yearly saving is for a typical-usage customer in your area
  • If discounts appear smaller than they once were in some areas, it might be because the base price has also dropped
  • As of 1 July 2019, some discounts may apply to supply charges, as well as to usage charges

You can use the estimated yearly bills or annual cost savings to quickly scan and compare available offers. Of course, your actual bill will depend on your usage.


Pricing changes affecting all states

If you're currently on a standing offer with flat rate tariffs, your pricing is going to be adjusted to match either the DMO or VDO in your area. Unless an exception applies to you, we'll let you know if your prices are changing.

For all other customers, changes to electricity and natural gas prices depend on where you live.

Other price influencing factors

Here are some of the other things that affect what you pay for electricity and natural gas

Includes the costs associated with delivering your energy across powerlines and pipelines. These charges are paid to network companies and regulated by the Australian Energy Regulator.

Fixed costs also include retail costs like the systems and people responsible for billing and customer service.

This is the actual energy you use at your home or business.

Your tariff

Like most retailers, we offer different kinds of tariffs:

  • a flat rate tariff (commonly known as a peak-only tariff), which charges you the same amount all day every day for each kilowatt per hour (kWh), OR
  • a flexible, time-of-use tariff, where your kWh charge will be different at different times - peak times, off-peak, shoulder, etc. 
  • a controlled load tariff, that is metered seperately to the rest of your household and is dedicated to high energy-usage appliances like hot water systems.

The back of your bill displays the particular tariff you're currently on. 

Your distributor

Your tariff options for both electricity and natural gas depend on who your energy distributor is, and that's determined by where you live.

When you enter your address you'll be shown links alongside each of our plans. These will take you to the Australian Government's Energy Made Easy site, where you can view the Basic Plan Information Document for the plan you've chosen, and compare it with other retailers' plans.

Residents of VIC and WA

Your consumption

Our energy bills provide a breakdown of:

  • how much energy you've consumed over the billing period
  • what you consumed at the same time last year
  • how your household compares with others in your neighbourhood.

Why do we have different energy plans? Because we know what suits you won't suit everyone. For example, you might like Origin Max Saver, where you'll get a bigger discount if you agree to all the eligibility criteria. Want something quick and easy? You might go for Origin Flexi. Other things to look out for would be the length of the plan, and whether the discount is off the supply and usage or just off usage. Whatever you need, we've got a plan for you.

Other price variables

Additional charges could apply to you, depending on your contract type and the state in which you live. These can include credit card payment fees, late payment fees and disconnection and reconnection fees. Discover the additional charges that could apply to you.

View additional charges

If your solar panels generate more energy than you use and this energy is sent back to the power grid, you may be eligible for a credit on your energy bill. This is called a feed-in tariff. Tariff rates depend on your state and may be funded by your state government, your energy retailer, or a mix of both.
